Baum Cycles: Specialized Romin Saddle

I regularly have requests to apply a logos to saddles. In many cases the outcome is more of an abstract interpretation of the logo necessitated by the limitations of the materials and techniques I have at hand as well as the limited space on many saddle models. I made this BAUM logo by adding larger perforations to a regular grid pattern.

S-Works saddles for Bastion Cycles 2022

For Bastion Cycles I have a classic style which incorporates their logo as a raised motif and a perforated grid that references the wound fibre pattern on their carbon fibre tubes. The bar tape perforations are arranged to suggest the shape of the Bastion 'B' logo. Above is a Romin Evo and below are two sizes of the S-Works Power saddle.

A perforated background interpretation of the Tommasini logo for Ian's SMP Stratos.

A pair of SMP Drakons for Steven over in Dubai. Black leather with linear all over perforations in dark silver with green and blue highlights. The brand label at the back is replaced with a hand dyed leather piece stamped with his family name.

Fizik Aliante VS: Carved

For medical reasons Ross needed to carve a chunk of foam from one side of his saddle. After years of sealing the exposed foam with gaffer tape Ross approached me to make an asymmetric  leather cover to perfectly fit the modified form. To get the best fit an additional panel was needed. I'm super happy with the outcome, I hope Ross is too.

Custom Card Coin Ride Wallet

 A special custom card sized ride wallet for Simon. As a design reference he asked me to take his very well used ride wallet, formerly a key pouch. I more or less replicated the design with modifications to suit the stiffer kangaroo leather and to address the areas of heavy wear on the original. Thanks Simon!

Custom Moleskine Notebook Cover with Bear & Cub

 

I designed and made one of these a little while back for Dean with his spanner crab logo embossed on the front. He then commissioned me to make another with his mate's logo as a special birthday gift. The Moleskine hard cover notebook slots into the front and back sleeves. The back sleeve is shaped  with space to allow the book's elastic strap to perform its function.

One Piece Collection : a BUSYMAN collaboration with simétrie

Six years ago we developed a pair of wallets based on a simple principle of one piece of folded leather with minimal stitching. Since then I've been using one myself and I've made a handful for individual customers and some gifts for friends and family. After 6 years they have developed great patina and are still going strong.

In collaboration with Simone at simétrie workshop we have been refining the design and she will be launching the co-branded One Piece bifold and card wallets at The Big Design Market in Melbourne this weekend starting Friday.

The wallets are made in-house by Simone at simétrie workshop from sustainable vegetable tanned kangaroo leather. Check out the simétrie website to learn more about the ethos behind the brand as well as the other beautifully hand crafted bags and accessories on offer. The relationship between Busyman and Simone began when she interned with me as an undergraduate fashion design student and several years as my part time leather craft assistant.

In the future we hope to add more styles to the One Piece Collection.

Rapha RCC: Saddles Tailored for Baum

Baum Cycles' special project with Rapha CC to build limited edition Orbis bikes exclusively for RCC members from different chapters worldwide. The 'tailored' option had several upgrades including my leatherwork on the saddle and bar tape. Here are a range of the different saddles I worked on for the project. Starting with the Fizik Arione. James' Aspide Supercomfort in whiskey coloured kangaroo whip leather with matching twin row perforated bar tape. Black perforations, simple and understated. Complicated pattern with lots of gussets in the Vs and cut-outs. I love the challenge of the pattern making, aiming to get the skin to fit perfectly. Finding a balance between minimal seams and how mouldable the leather is. This one was a pleasure. Thanks James.

Fizik Arione: Unicorn Redone

 

After much riding, wear and tear Misao asked me to refresh his worn out Arione with a some new leather in the same design as last time. The refresh included some minor repairs to damaged padding. Hopefully he gets a couple more years out of this saddle. Featuring the unicorn shield logo for his Speedvagen.
