Paul Smith Visits Melbourne
| Feride, Paul & Busyman (Me) |
Sir Paul Smith was in Melbourne for two days this week to officially launch his new shop on Collins Street. He very generously agreed to talk to a group of RMIT fashion students about his philosophy on work, business and design. It was inspiring and a whole lot of fun. After the talk Paul took Feride's and my bikes for a spin down Swanston Street.

Axe Cover: Custom Narcissus
This custom axe complete with Busyman leather cover is a gift from Mark to his old school friend who resides in Montreux, Switzerland, Suisse.... The Narcissus (kind of a white daffodil - I think) is the floral emblem for the region. The horizontal straps have a utility function so the axe can be strapped to his donkey for trips into the forest above Montreux.

Cafe Racer Saddle
I made the saddle - from scratch! Starting off with a laminated bent wood pan and finishing off with vegetable tanned cow hide. The saddle was a collaborative project with Modern Motorcycle Co who built up the bike. They also organised for some fibreglass work underneath to make space for the fender. It was not easy.

Lug Heart Arione
One of my more subtle recover jobs, this Arione Tri saddle uses Kangaroo leather with perforations and de-boss technique to mirror the lug detail on MP's bike. A black Llewellyn road bike featuring polished stainless lugs with heart shaped cut-outs filled in with red. On the saddle the perforations are backed with red for the heart and silver for the lug shape.
Pink and Grey Prologo
One of my other favourite leathers is this grey vegetable tanned cow hide (thanks Marissa). The Prologo Scratch Nack features pink perforated detailing on the seat section and a neat little perforated logo on the drive side. Matching tape of course with stitching too. We really could do with a recolouring of the lack plastic trim, Alex? Also for a Firefly in Taiwan.

SLR White Maple
Chris' old SLR carbon saddle had seen much better days. The mountain bike treatment had worn away a lot of leather. The recover is in white kangaroo with the Canadian maple impression at the back. Perforations highlighted in red mimic the internal structure of the leaf. The bar tape is for his other bike, white with subtle pink perforations to match pale pink anodised skewers.
